What is a composite resin (white filling)?

A composite resin is a tooth–colored plastic mixture filled with glass (silicon dioxide). Composite fillings are ideal to replace old amalgam fillings and may also be used to close gaps between front teeth. Composite fillings can be successfully placed in the back teeth as well.

The main advantage of composite filling is the aesthetic appereance as dentists can blend shades to create a color nearly identical to that of the actual tooth. Composites fillings support the remaining tooth structure and helps to prevent breakage and insulate the tooth from the excessive temperature changes.

After receiving a composite filling the patient may experience minor post operative sensitivity, it usually dissipates within a few weeks. Composite last 7-10 years.
